The process of renovating a home will be a lot easier if you are aware of the foundational principles of Interior Design. This knowledge will allow you to play an active role in creating your dream house, and the following guide will provide you some of the elements that lead to great interior design.

Balance

Balance will allow you to distribute all the elements in your space evenly, which will help create visual harmony. You can achieve balance by using shapes, colours, patterns, and textures. The three common ways to do this are symmetrical balance, asymmetrical balance, and radial balance. The first requires placing objects symmetrically on either side of an imaginary central axis.

In contrast, the second keeps the focal point on the imaginary axis while allowing different and oddly numbered objects. Asymmetrical balance is known to provide a more natural feel.

Radial balance is when objects are arranged around a central focal point, usually in a circular layout.

Unity

Carefully curated elements will make a space come together nicely, and you can achieve unity through the use of similar colours, patterns or textures. Equal spacing of objects or the repetition of elements will also allow you to achieve uniformity among the components that you choose to use for your home’s interior design.

Rhythm

This involves creating repetition and contrast within an interior, and this principle aims to carry visual interest around a room. To do this, you can use the same colour or pattern at different intervals.

Contrast

Combining two or more different forms will allow you to achieve contrast, and once again, this can be done by colour, form or space. The easiest way to do this is through alternating contrasting colours that are directly across from each other on the colour wheel. Placing different shapes close together is another way to achieve contrast—putting a round mirror next to a rectangular dining table is an effective method of creating this effect.

Emphasis, Scale and Proportion

Every room needs one central element as a focal point. This means that the other items should complement this central focal point. A large piece of furniture, an art piece or an accent wall are all examples of a focal point.

The ratio is critical, so the size and dimension of the objects in a room must relate to one another proportionally; otherwise, they can look out of place.

The Small Details Add Up: Interior Design Transformation

You should never overlook the little things—details matter. Nothing should be considered unimportant, and every item from your cabinets to your cushions must be considered carefully. Every little thing will add to the overall appearance of your space and focusing on minor details can help transform your space from ordinary to extraordinary.
